Ghana international Antoine Semenyo has opened up on the player who shaped his football identity, revealing deep admiration for Ivory Coast and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, whose all-round attacking style he believes mirrors his own.
The AFC Bournemouth forward, who has enjoyed an impressive start to the current campaign, has emerged as one of the most talked-about players ahead of the winter transfer window, with several top clubs monitoring his situation closely.
Speaking about his influences, the Black Stars attacker did not hide his respect for the two-time Africa Footballer of the Year, crediting Drogba’s physicality, pace and finishing ability as key elements he has tried to replicate in his own game.
“I always wanted to play like him. So strong, so quick, great shooting technique. He just suits the way I play — left foot, right foot, can head the ball,” Semenyo said.
Semenyo’s form for Bournemouth has significantly boosted his profile, and with a £65 million release clause in his contract set to become active in January, the 24-year-old is expected to be at the centre of a major transfer bidding war.
Several clubs are understood to be aware of the clause and are already positioning themselves to make moves for the versatile forward when the window opens.
AFC Bournemouth had earlier indicated they were unwilling to sanction a January departure, keen to retain one of their most influential attacking assets for the remainder of the season. However, the activation of the release clause could limit the club’s control over his future.
With growing interest and his stock rising rapidly, Semenyo may be set for a major career move away from the Vitality Stadium, as Europe’s elite circle in for the pacey Black Stars forward.
