Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren has expressed confidence and ambition ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), insisting Ghana will push for an even stronger showing at the continental showpiece.
Ghana have been drawn in Group D alongside Cameroon, Mali and Cape Verde, setting up a competitive group-stage campaign for the Queens when the tournament kicks off later this year.
Björkegren, who guided Ghana to a bronze medal at the last WAFCON, says the team is targeting a better finish this time around, buoyed by significant progress since his appointment.
“I am looking forward to the tournament. When I came in, we were number six in Africa, but now we are number three, which makes us top-seeded,” the Swedish coach said.
While acknowledging the quality of the opposition, Björkegren stressed that the team’s focus remains on continuous improvement rather than rankings.
“At the end of the day, whether it’s going to help or not, I don’t know. We will face another three really good teams, but as I said, I am looking forward to the tournament. We will push to do an even better tournament this time,” he added.
Under the competition format, the top two teams from each group will advance automatically to the quarter-finals, with the semi-finalists earning qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
The Black Queens will be based in Fes for their group-stage matches, as they aim to build on recent momentum and reassert their status among Africa’s elite.
