Veteran Ghana forward Andre Ayew is hopeful his first goal for NAC Breda will mark the beginning of a productive spell after ending a lengthy wait to open his account for the Dutch side.
The 36-year-old striker scored with a well-taken header in NAC Breda’s thrilling 3-3 draw against Feyenoord, bringing an end to a nine-match goal drought since joining the Eredivisie club as a free agent in January. Fellow Ghanaian Kamal Sowah was also on target in the entertaining encounter.
Speaking to ESPN after the match, Ayew admitted the goal was an important moment but insisted he always believed the breakthrough would arrive.
“It’s always important to score goals as an offensive player, but sometimes you have to be patient and calm. I knew it was going to come,” he said.
“I was very focused on us winning games. I hope it is the first of many.”
The timing of the goal could also prove significant at the international level. Otto Addo, head coach of the Ghana national football team, is expected to announce his squad soon for upcoming friendly matches against Austria national football team and Germany national football team later this month.
Ayew, who has earned more than 100 caps for Ghana, acknowledged that his experience helped him remain composed despite the wait for his first goal at the club.
“It was due, but with my experience, I’m calm enough to know how football works. Sooner or later, when you do what you have to do on the pitch, it will come.”
With his scoring drought finally over, Ayew will now be aiming to build momentum and help NAC Breda push for improved results in the remainder of the season.
