Ghana football legend Abedi Ayew Pele, says he sees himself as the luckiest captain of Ghana’s senior National Team, the Black Stars, to have played with the best group of experienced and good players during his reign as the talisman of the team.
Speaking on GTV sports + “TIME WITH THE CAPTAINS” show on Sunday, May 17, on an international friendly match between the Black Stars and Norway in 1995, Abedi Pele said: “I was one of the luckiest captains of the Black Stars because anytime I had a good and a solid team around me, most of the players were amazing, in difficult times they always rise to the occasion.”
“I will give all the praises to them and not to only those I played with in the game against Norway but to all my play mates I will say very big thank you to them, personally I will like be watching some of these matches more to see how some us performed and how some of them are doing now,” he said.
The three time African footballer of the year and attacking midfielder discussed the match against Norway extensively together with three of his play mates Sam Johnson foyoo, Yaw Acheampong and Yaw Preko as well as sensational Mallam Yahaya, all of whom agreed to how though the game was and outlined the importance of the match for Ghana at the time in a bid to build a strong team ahead of the 1998 World Cup qualifiers and other important matches in Africa.
Born in Kibi in the Eastern region of Ghana, maestro Abedi Ayew Pele started his football career at Real Tamale United 1980 to 1982 before joining Al sadd, FC Zurich, Dragons l’Oueme but had to return to Real Tamale United after spending three years playing overseas.
The Nania FC President also had stints with many other clubs such as Niort, Mulhouse, Marseille, Lyon, Torino, 1860 Munich and finally ended his glittering career at Al Ain in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates in the 2000 with a total club career appearances of 479 and scoring 157 goals and 73 National appearances with 33 goals.
He was also honored with the BBC Africa footballer of the year 1991 and a three time Africa footballer of year 1991,1992 and 1993.
