Ghanaian forward Inaki Williams was on target for Athletic Club on Thursday night, but his goal was not enough as the Spanish side fell 2-1 to AS Roma in the first leg of their UEFA Europa League Round of 16 clash at the Stadio Olimpico.
After a goalless first half, Williams broke the deadlock in the 50th minute, heading home from a well-delivered corner by Aitor Paredes to give the visitors the lead.
However, Athletic Club’s advantage was short-lived, as Angelino equalized for Roma just six minutes later with a powerful strike. The Spanish side fought to hold on for a draw, but Eldor Shomurodov found the winner for the Italian outfit in the 90th minute, sealing a dramatic 2-1 victory.
Williams and his teammates will now return to Spain, looking to overturn the deficit in the second leg and keep their Europa League campaign alive.
