Former Asante Kotoko midfielder Kwabena Dodzi has expressed concern over the sudden departure of head coach Abdul Karim Zito, describing the timing as unsettling and poorly aligned with the club’s immediate priorities.
Zito stepped down just days before Kotoko’s high-profile Ghana Premier League encounter with arch-rivals Hearts of Oak. Assistant coach Prince Yaw Owusu was handed temporary responsibility for the team ahead of the crucial fixture.
The Super Clash, staged at the Baba Yara Stadium, ended in a 1-0 victory for Hearts of Oak, bringing an end to their prolonged winless run against the Porcupine Warriors. Defender Baba Adamu netted the decisive goal to secure maximum points for the Phobians.
Speaking to Kessben FM, Dodzi said he was surprised Kotoko entered such an important match without a substantive head coach.
“It baffles me that Kotoko played the Hearts game without a substantive coach,” he stated.
According to Dodzi, the absence of stable leadership may have impacted the team’s intensity and organisation on the day. He admitted Hearts delivered a strong performance but believes Kotoko could have fared better with clearer tactical direction and motivation from the bench.
Looking ahead, Kotoko will shift focus to their next league assignment against Young Apostles in Matchday 23, a fixture that could prove crucial in keeping their title ambitions alive.
The Porcupine Warriors currently sit fifth on the table with 35 points, trailing leaders Medeama SC by nine points as the season gathers pace.
