Dutch-born Ghanaian goalkeeper Rome Jayden Owusu-Oduro remains committed to his club career as he continues to impress for AZ Alkmaar in both the Eredivisie and European competitions.
Born to a Ghanaian father and a Dutch mother, the 20-year-old shot-stopper has represented the Netherlands at youth level but remains eligible to play for Ghana’s Black Stars.
Owusu-Oduro’s Breakout Season with AZ Alkmaar
Owusu-Oduro has been in stellar form this season, playing a key role in AZ Alkmaar’s run to the KNVB Cup final and the UEFA Europa League Round of 16. His standout performance in the second leg against Tottenham Hotspur nearly helped AZ stage a comeback, but the English side ultimately edged them out to secure a quarter-final spot.
Yet to Decide on International Future
Speaking after the match, Owusu-Oduro addressed questions about his international future, stating that he is currently focused on his commitments with the Netherlands’ youth team.
“Not now,” he said when asked about playing for Ghana. “What I told everybody is I have to focus and play for the Young Oranges for now. We have to do Euros, and my focus is here now. I say in the future, but it is not my priority now.”
Admiration for Ghanaian Legends
Despite not committing to the Black Stars yet, Owusu-Oduro revealed his admiration for Ghanaian football legends, particularly the Ayew brothers and Asamoah Gyan.
“I always liked the Ayew brothers and Asamoah Gyan, and some other players. I watched them with my dad,” he said.
While his decision remains uncertain, Ghana continues to monitor his progress as the GFA looks to bolster the Black Stars’ goalkeeping options.
