Asante Kotoko head coach Abdul Karim Zito has openly admitted that strengthening his midfield remains a priority, revealing he is still in the market for a defensive midfielder as the midseason transfer window for the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League approaches its closing stages.
Zito’s comments come on the back of Kotoko’s 2-0 victory over bottom-placed Eleven Wonders on Wednesday at the University of Ghana Stadium. While the result secured maximum points for the Porcupine Warriors, the overall performance — particularly in midfield — drew criticism from sections of the club’s supporters.
Addressing concerns after the match, the Kotoko coach conceded that his midfield lacked balance and protection, highlighting the need for a specialist defensive midfielder.
“For the DM [defensive midfield] position, I still need some. I still need a DM, and [Hubert] Gyau didn’t get his day because it also affected the midfield,” Zito said.
He further explained that injuries had disrupted his midfield options, limiting their effectiveness on the day.
“Some of the midfielders are just coming back from injury, so I didn’t expect them to play the normal game the way they would. In the end, since we were able to win, I’m okay with that, but it shall be well,” he added.
The Ghana Premier League midseason transfer window is scheduled to close on January 15, 2026, leaving Kotoko with limited time to address the identified gaps in their squad.
Meanwhile, the Kumasi-based giants will return to action on Sunday, December 28, when they host Bechem United at the Baba Yara Stadium in a Matchday 16 encounter.
