Asante Kotoko goalkeeper Fredrick Asare has dismissed suggestions that the team took Division One side Golden Kick FC lightly ahead of their clash in the 2025 MTN FA Cup final.
The Porcupine Warriors edged past Golden Kick with a narrow 2-1 victory at the University of Ghana Stadium, securing their 10th FA Cup title and a place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup.
Despite the win coming via a late controversial penalty, converted by Kwame Opoku—who scored both goals on the day—Kotoko head coach Karim Zito maintained that Golden Kick had run out of steam prior to the decisive moment.
Asare, who was not in the starting lineup for the final, emphasized that Kotoko gave their opponents full respect and prepared accordingly.
“They are a good side, and coming to play us, they had the motivation to prove something,” Asare said. “We didn’t underrate them. As you saw, it was a tough game for us, but at the end of the day, we were also motivated to deliver something for ourselves.”
Kotoko’s attention now turns to the President’s Cup, where they will face fierce rivals Accra Hearts of Oak on July 6.
