“Kotoko were not surprised by Karim Zito’s resignation” — Sarfo Duku

Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, has revealed that the club was not taken aback by Karim Zito’s decision to step down as head coach, explaining that signs of his dissatisfaction had been evident.

Zito resigned on Monday, a day after Kotoko’s elimination from the FA Cup following a 4-2 penalty shootout defeat to Aduana FC at the Baba Yara Stadium. In response, the club has handed interim coaching responsibilities to Prince Yaw Owusu.

Speaking to Luv FM, Duku said the coach’s decision did not come as a shock to management.

“We were not surprised, because we knew that the coach wasn’t happy with the performance of his team, and so it didn’t come to us as a surprise at all,” he explained.

Sarfo Duku also dismissed suggestions that the club had been considering terminating Zito’s contract before his resignation. According to him, management had no intention of parting ways with the coach and instead wanted clarity on recent events.

“No, we had no plan to do that,” Duku stated.

“We were to receive the details of what transpired in the course of the match. And then, of course, we have asked the necessary questions,” he added.

Kotoko’s defeat to Aduana marked another setback in what has been a difficult run for the team. The Porcupine Warriors have managed just one win in their last five matches across all competitions, a dip in form that increased pressure on the technical team.

With Zito now gone, attention quickly turns to a crucial fixture in the Ghana Premier League. Kotoko will host arch-rivals Hearts of Oak at the Baba Yara Stadium on Sunday in Matchday 22, with interim coach Prince Yaw Owusu expected to lead the team into the highly anticipated Super Clash.
