Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has pledged to dedicate his life to enhancing the welfare of prisoners across Ghana. He made this commitment at the official launch of the Prisons Football Project held on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.
The new initiative is designed to use football and other sports as tools to encourage positive change, boost morale, and support the reintegration of inmates into society after serving their sentences.
As part of the launch, Mr. Nyantakyi and his team presented a wide range of sports equipment to the Ghana Prisons Service. These included footballs, jerseys, volleyballs, and basketballs. The project, organized in collaboration with the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG), aims to create a positive and healthy environment within prisons by promoting discipline, teamwork, and mental well-being through sport.
Speaking at the event, Nyantakyi revealed a deeply personal reason behind his involvement. He recalled visiting his brother, Alhaji Inusah, who was imprisoned in Wa following an accidental shooting during a land conflict. Inusah, a former football club executive, inspired Nyantakyi to take action and advocate for inmates who may not have had proper legal representation.
He added that many prisoners could be victims of circumstance, stressing the need to ensure fairness in the justice system. Nyantakyi also expressed his intention to help review cases where due legal process may have been denied.
The Prisons Football Project seeks not only to offer recreational benefits but also to play a meaningful role in inmate rehabilitation. By making sports a part of prison life, the initiative hopes to help inmates develop life skills, build self-esteem, and prepare for life after prison.
