Ghanaian midfielder Lawrence Agyekum opened the scoring for Cercle Brugge with an early strike, but his effort proved insufficient as his side fell 4-2 to Beerschot in the Belgian First Division A Relegation Group clash on Saturday.
Agyekum struck in the 6th minute, finishing confidently from the center of the box after a slick assist from Erick Nunes. The 21-year-old, making his 34th appearance of the season, put in a solid shift in midfield before being substituted in the 57th minute.
Cercle Brugge went into the break with a 1-0 lead, but the game turned on its head in the second half. Beerschot responded quickly, with Apostolos Konstantopoulos scoring twice in quick succession in the 48th and 50th minutes. Loïc Mbe Soh and Faisal Al-Ghamdi extended the lead with two penalty goals to put the match out of reach.
Paris Brunner netted a stoppage-time consolation for Cercle Brugge, who struggled throughout the match, managing only 37% possession and 13 shots compared to Beerschot’s 23.
Despite the defeat, Cercle Brugge still lead the all-time head-to-head with 10 wins to Beerschot’s five, though the gap is closing following Saturday’s disappointing result.
