Mali head coach Tom Saintfiet has expressed surprise at Ghana’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with the Black Stars in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, Saintfiet described Ghana as a traditional powerhouse in African football and admitted he did not expect to see them miss out on the continental showpiece.
“It is shocking that Ghana will not be playing at the 2025 AFCON,” he said. “With their history, talent, and influence in African football, I always expect them to be there.”
Despite Ghana’s absence from the tournament, Saintfiet stressed that the Black Stars remain a formidable opponent, noting their quality players and strong pedigree on the international stage. He added that Mali is preparing with full seriousness, knowing that Ghana will come into the World Cup qualifier with extra motivation to prove themselves.
The Black Stars, four-time AFCON winners, last lifted the trophy in 1982 and have since been chasing a fifth title. Their absence from the 2025 edition in Morocco has sparked debates among fans and pundits, with calls for the team to rebuild and bounce back stronger.
