Man Utd reject Newcastle loan offer for Jesse Lingard

Manchester United have rejected a loan offer from Newcastle for Jesse Lingard, 90min has learned.

The 29-year-old has been a peripheral figure at Old Trafford this season, starting just once in 14 appearances, and is into the final six months of his contract.

But despite barely featuring for United under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or Ralf Rangnick, United are not willing to let Lingard leave on loan – despite interim boss Rangnick previously asserting that the club’s sizeable squad needed to be trimmed down.

90min understands that Man Utd are still open to a permanent sale this month, as they look to cash in on a player who is almost certain to depart in the summer for nothing.

Newcastle had hoped to take him to St. James’ Park on loan until the end of the season, with Eddie Howe desperately trying to bolster his squad in attempt to stave off the threat of relegation.

The Magpies were prepared to make Lingard the highest-paid player at the club in a bid to persuade him to drop down the league, but they faced an uphill battle to convince the England international – who is undecided on his future and in no rush to make a decision, 90min understands.

West Ham retain an interest in the attacking midfielder, who shone on loan at the London Stadium in the second half of last season as the Hammers secured a Europa League place. A move late in the window should not be ruled out.

Newcastle – who had asked Man Utd about a number of potential loans including Lingard and Donny van de Beek – are looking to push through as many deals as they can before the end of the January window.

The Magpies have already secured deals for Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood, but they want a handful more before the end of the month.
