Defending champions Asante Kotoko booked their place in the MTN FA Cup Round of 16 after claiming a hard-fought 1–0 victory over city rivals King Faisal on Wednesday afternoon.
The Kumasi derby, staged at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium, formed part of the Round of 32 fixtures, with both teams naming strong line-ups in a keenly contested battle for progression in Ghana’s domestic cup competition.
Chances were fashioned at both ends in an evenly balanced encounter, but Kotoko proved more clinical when it mattered. Saaka Dauda struck the decisive goal in the closing stages of the first half, a composed finish that ultimately separated the sides after 90 minutes.
King Faisal pushed for an equaliser after the break, but the Porcupine Warriors held firm to see out the win and keep their FA Cup title defence on track.
While the result secures a place in the last 16, Kotoko will be conscious that sharper performances will be required as the competition progresses, particularly against stronger opposition later in the tournament.
