Retired FIFA referee Mercy Quarcoe Tagoe has expressed disappointment at the treatment meted out to female referees in the country.
Speaking with Accra based Asempa FM, the highly regarded Mercy Tagoe enumerated some reasons why female refereeing in Ghana is not reaching its deserved status. She argues that the reason why Ghanaian female referees don’t gain representation at major CAF competitions is due to the fact that most of the decision makers at CAF are from Francophone countries so there are always preferential treatment for the Francophone referees.
“The general problem is the domination of CAF by Francophone countries so it very difficult to breakthrough as a referee from an Anglophone country. So referees in Ghana need to push more to the peak of refereeing in Africa. The Referee Associations of Ghana must also give female refs opportunities”. Mercy Tagoe apprised.
