Nigeria national team head coach Eric Chelle has openly shared what he considers the ultimate ambition of his managerial career — one day taking charge of Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid.
In a recent interview, the 48-year-old Malian tactician spoke candidly about his lofty dream, making it clear that managing one of Europe’s most successful clubs remains his long-term target.
“My biggest dream is to become the first African coach in the history of Real Madrid,” Chelle said, underlining both the magnitude of the goal and its importance to him personally, as well as to African football.
Chelle has steadily built his reputation on the continent through impressive performances at the Africa Cup of Nations. He first rose to prominence after guiding Mali to the semi-finals of AFCON 2023, a run that significantly boosted his profile. Two years later, he matched that achievement with Nigeria at AFCON 2025, once again reaching the last four and ultimately leading the Super Eagles to a bronze medal finish.
Those accomplishments strengthened his standing as one of the continent’s emerging coaching figures, although his tenure has not been without setbacks. Despite taking charge during a challenging period with only six matches remaining in the qualification series, Chelle was unable to secure Nigeria a place at the FIFA World Cup.
Before stepping into coaching, Chelle began his journey as a player and later transitioned to the dugout, where he gained recognition for his tactical discipline, competitive approach, and commitment to developing young talent. His rapid rise in international football has placed him among the notable coaching names in Africa, even if a move to a club of Real Madrid’s stature still appears a distant prospect.
Nonetheless, Chelle believes that consistent progress and strong results could one day bring him closer to that dream. For now, managing the Spanish giants remains an ambitious aspiration, but one the Super Eagles boss is determined to keep chasing.
