Ghanaian youngster Kwaku Agyabeng has opened up about the challenges he faced at home before realizing his dream of playing in Major League Soccer with Sporting Kansas City.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who was selected fourth overall in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft, made his professional debut just 38 minutes into the new MLS season, coming on in SKC’s opener against San Jose Earthquakes at PayPal Park.
“My father didn’t want me to play soccer,” Agyabeng revealed, explaining that his dad initially preferred he focus on academics and pursue a traditional career path. However, after recognizing his son’s talent and determination, he became one of his biggest supporters.
Agyabeng’s rapid rise began in Kumasi before moving to the United States, where he starred at Clemson University, earning national attention. Prior to college, he also shone at St. Benedict’s High School and Cedar Stars Bergen, winning two national titles.
Despite SKC’s 3-0 defeat, head coach Raphael Wicky praised the teenager’s impact, describing him as a bright prospect for the club’s future.
Now rebuilding confidence at the highest level, Agyabeng is already being tipped as a potential contender for the MLS Rookie of the Year award as he begins his professional journey.
