Jerome Opoku, the Turkey-based defender, is eager to seize additional opportunities to represent Ghana following his second appearance for the national team against Nigeria last Friday.
Originally from London, Opoku, currently on loan at Istanbul Basaksehir, displayed his talents during Ghana’s recent 2-1 defeat, despite receiving a red card during the match.
Opoku made his international debut in a 4-0 loss to the United States of America in October 2023, stepping in as a late replacement for Alexander Djiku.
Reflecting on his debut, Opoku acknowledged the challenges, stating, “The game against the USA wasn’t ideal, especially as it was my first match. Our team performance didn’t aid me much, and I know I could have performed better. However, compared to that match, I see today’s game as a stepping stone for improvement. I appreciate the coach’s style, which aligns with my own preference for playing football rather than resorting to long balls. Under this coach, I believe I can demonstrate the quality of my game.”
Opoku attributed his improved performance against Nigeria to the position he played, underscoring the importance of tactical alignment for his success.
Expressing his aspirations, Opoku said, “I aim to continue working hard and making significant contributions to the national team. Whenever I step onto the pitch, I strive to exhibit my skills and contribute positively to the team’s success. My goal is to earn more caps for Ghana and evolve as both an individual player and as part of the team.”
Ghana’s upcoming friendly against Uganda’s Cranes on Tuesday, March 26, at the Stade de Marrakesh, offers Opoku another chance to solidify his presence on the international stage.
