FC Lorient have been handed a timely boost with the return of Ghanaian centre-back Nathaniel Adjei, who has resumed first-team training after spending close to a year on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

The 23-year-old suffered the setback on November 18, 2024, during his senior debut for the Black Stars in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger. He was forced off the pitch and later underwent ankle surgery in December, beginning what would become a long and demanding road to recovery.

Adjei spent several months in rehabilitation and intensive conditioning before being cleared to rejoin the squad. His absence was deeply felt at Lorient, not only in defence but also in the dressing room, where his leadership and infectious energy had made him a key figure.

His teammates greeted his return to training last week with warm applause and encouragement, highlighting the respect and admiration he commands within the squad. Head coach Olivier Pantaloni also praised the defender’s resilience, describing him as “an example for the group.”

Adjei’s return comes at a crucial time for Lorient, who have endured an inconsistent start to the Ligue 1 season and are eager for stability at the back. The Ghanaian’s presence could provide the defensive solidity and morale lift the team needs as they seek to climb the table.

Adjei first joined Lorient on loan from Swedish side Hammarby in January 2024, making 15 league appearances. His impressive performances convinced the club to secure his services permanently in the summer for a reported €7 million.
