Pape Gueye led a strong Senegal comeback as the Teranga Lions overturned an early setback to defeat Sudan 3–1 and become the first team to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Senegal were stunned just six minutes into the match when Aamir Abdallah fired Sudan into a surprise lead. However, the defending champions responded with calm and authority, taking control of the game through their midfield leader.
Pape Gueye turned the match on its head with two well-taken goals before halftime, both strikes coming from outside the penalty area to put Senegal firmly in front. His performance set the tone for a dominant display by Pape Thiaw’s side.
The victory was sealed in the 77th minute when 17-year-old substitute Ibrahim Mbaye announced himself on the big stage. The teenage forward showed great composure to power home Senegal’s third goal, confirming the team’s passage into the last eight.
Despite the defeat, Sudan earned praise for a brave and disciplined performance, pushing Senegal early on and competing strongly before being worn down by the tournament favourites.
With the win, Senegal now turn their attention to the quarter-finals, where they will face either Mali or Tunisia on Friday, January 9. With form, depth, and confidence on their side, the Teranga Lions continue to look like one of the strongest contenders for the AFCON title.
