Former Ashgold and Asante Kotoko defender, Richard Osei Agyemang, has sounded a warning that no player in the Ghana Premier League is financially secure due to the lack of a well-defined salary structure in the league.
In an interview with Kessben TV, Agyemang expressed his concerns about the ongoing player exodus from the league, which he believes is a direct result of inadequate salaries.
Agyemang lamented that players are compelled to seek opportunities in less renowned football nations due to the meager wages in Ghana. This sentiment is echoed by other players in the league who have criticized the low salary levels and disorganized salary structure.
The situation has led to players hastily accepting contracts from lesser-known leagues outside Ghana.
According to Agyemang, the situation is dire, with no player earning a decent living wage.
“Elsewhere, the signing-on-fees of players in Ghana are like the salaries of their players. They should pay the players here well for them to stay. At least players should be earning around GHC10,000,” he said.
When asked if there was any player in the league who could be considered financially secure, Agyemang was adamant that there was none.
“There is no player in the Ghana Premier League who is rich. There is no one, I tell you. I dare anyone to come out,” he added.
Agyemang’s comments come at a time when many players are struggling to make ends meet due to low salaries and poor working conditions.
The situation has led to calls for improved salaries and better working conditions for players in the Ghana Premier League.
