Former Ghana forward Prince Tagoe has shared a revealing glimpse into how Black Stars players were compensated during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
In an interview with Sporty FM, Tagoe explained that the squad received their bonuses in cash after each victory.
“We were paid in cash during the 2010 World Cup. After every win, the team manager would knock on your door, you sign and take your money,” Tagoe recounted.
The ex-forward’s remarks shed light on the practical and direct approach the team management used to reward players, a stark contrast to modern electronic bank transfers and performance-based contracts.
Tagoe, who represented Ghana during several key international tournaments, emphasized that the practice kept players motivated and underscored the tangible rewards of success on the world stage.
The 2010 World Cup remains one of Ghana’s most memorable campaigns, with the Black Stars reaching the quarterfinals and narrowly missing out on a historic semi-final spot after a dramatic penalty shootout against Uruguay.
