Ghana midfielder Mohammed Kudus says he remains proud of his Tottenham Hotspur teammates despite their heartbreaking defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night at the Stadio Friuli.
The Europa League champions looked set for a famous victory after racing into a 2-0 lead, but PSG mounted a dramatic late comeback before winning 4-3 on penalties.
Micky van de Ven opened the scoring for Spurs in the 39th minute, and new captain Cristian Romero doubled the advantage just three minutes into the second half. However, second-half substitutes Lee Kang-in and Gonçalo Ramos struck in the final ten minutes to pull PSG level and force the shootout. Misses from Van de Ven and Mathys Tel ultimately sealed Tottenham’s fate.
Reflecting on the loss, Kudus admitted the result was disappointing but insisted there were positives to take.
“It is disappointing to lose the game in the end. This is a big lesson to stay focused for the whole 90 minutes, but I am really proud of the team for their work ethic and energy. I think we had them for most of the game — just the last part we need to keep full concentration. We take this as a lesson. We have a game at the weekend and our full focus is on that,” he said.
Kudus impressed on the night, coming close to scoring in the first half when his glancing header clipped the post. The match marked his first competitive appearance for Spurs since his summer move from West Ham United.
The 24-year-old is now set to make his Premier League debut for Tottenham on Saturday against newly promoted Burnley.
