The Ghana Football Association announced the sacking of Black Stars head coach C. K Akonnor and his deputies on Monday exactly a week after the national team were defeated by South Africa in a 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier.
“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association has taken a decision to terminate the appointment of Black Stars Coach Charles Akonnor and his two Assistants with immediate effect. This follows the receipt of the Technical Report from the Head Coach of the Senior National Team and the report from the Black Stars Management Committee following Ghana’s Group G World Cup qualifying matches against Ethiopia and South Africa.” the statement said.
“The Executive Council after considering the two reports have decided to terminate its relationship with the Head Coach C. K Akonnor and the two Assistants.” it continued.
The South Africa game – on September 6th – thus represent the last game of Ghana that Akonnor oversaw. The Black Stars conceded an 83rd minute winner to lose the game by 1-0 and after a week he has been shown the exit.
In truth the performance of the Black Stars in the said match was insipid and uninspiring and judging from the public reaction that greeted the sacking of the former Ghana skipper, many agree with the GFA decision.
