Ghana’s Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says a potential return of André Ayew to the Black Stars for the next FIFA World Cup would not come as a shock to him.
In an interview with Adom FM, the Minister noted that the experienced forward remains an active professional and continues to prove his relevance at club level, keeping himself in the conversation for national team selection.
“I think he is picking up also. Once he has not retired and is still playing actively, I won’t be surprised to see him in the Black Stars squad for the World Cup,” Adams stated.
Selection Decision Rests With Coach
Despite his comments, Adams was clear that squad decisions remain the sole responsibility of the Black Stars’ technical bench.
“However, it is the responsibility of the coach to decide whether to invite him or not,” he added.
Ayew, Ghana’s most capped player and former captain, has played a pivotal role for the national team over the past decade, featuring prominently at multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and FIFA World Cup competitions. His leadership and big-game experience have often been viewed as valuable assets, particularly during periods of transition.
Club Form Reignites Debate
The 36-year-old has faced stiff competition from emerging talents in recent years, sparking debate about his long-term place in the national setup. However, his recent move to NAC Breda during the winter transfer window has revived discussions about a possible international return.
Since joining the Dutch Eredivisie side, Ayew has made eight appearances and delivered impressive performances, strengthening arguments for his inclusion as Ghana prepares for the global showpiece.
With the Black Stars focused on assembling a competitive squad for the Mundial, Ayew’s potential involvement is expected to remain a major talking point in the months ahead.
