The people of Sunyani have rejected the plan of the Sports Ministry to renovate the Coronation Park in the coming year, as they call for a FIFA standard stadium.
Ahead of the 2022 budget being presented in parliament by the Finance minister, there were talks that government has plans to rehabilitate the Coronation Park to be fit for purpose after being in an unpleasant state over the last few years.
The traditional leaders of Sunya reportedly invited the regional minister and some other officials and executives of the region but they were unable to honour the invite themselves while sending representatives.
The communication from the leaders was to inform the government of their demand for a standard stadium rather than renovating the Coronation Park.
However, the demands of the people were not captured in the finance minister’s presentation to the government with the renovation of the Coronation Park the only concern addressed in the budget.
The rationale behind the people of Sunyani demanding a FIFA standard pitch was to cater for other sporting disciplines such as boxing and athletics.
Also, they were looking at having other facilities in the pitch they were demanding including washrooms for supporters as well as a cafeteria.
The people of Sunyani were hoping that the FIFA standard stadium would have been agreed and named after former Black Stars icon Kwasi Owusu.
With nothing concrete yet from the ministry, the people of Sunyani have scheduled December 10, as a date to embark on a demonstration and bring the attention of the ministry to their demand.
