”The boy has something special” – KRC Genk head of football hails Ghanaian teen Christopher Bonsu Baah

KRC Genk’s Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, has lavished praise on Ghanaian teenage sensation Christopher Bonsu Baah, describing the 18-year-old as a “special” talent reminiscent of former Genk star Leon Bailey.

De Condé’s glowing endorsement of Bonsu Baah underscores Genk’s view of the teenager as a long-term investment, akin to other young talents who have used the Belgian club as a springboard to greater heights. Genk secured Bonsu Baah from Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08 in a €5.2 million deal last season, fending off interest from English Premier League clubs Everton and Brighton.

The Ghanaian prodigy has quickly settled into his new surroundings, justifying the faith placed in him by Genk, a club renowned for nurturing young talent. “The boy has something special, which made us go a little further for him than we normally do,” de Condé said, highlighting Genk’s high regard for the highly-rated winger. “It is a great achievement that we have secured him, given the enormous competition for these types of players in Europe.”

Bonsu Baah, who represented Ghana at the U-20 World Cup in 2023, has been tipped for a bright future in football. His explosive pace, dribbling skills, and eye for goal have drawn comparisons to Jamaican international Leon Bailey, who starred for Genk before securing a high-profile move to Aston Villa in 2022.

For Bonsu Baah, the move to Genk represents a significant step in his career, providing a platform to showcase his abilities in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues and potentially attracting the attention of even bigger clubs in the future.

With his raw potential and Genk’s renowned youth development system, Bonsu Baah could be the next African star to emerge from the Belgian club’s ranks, following in the footsteps of Bailey, Wilfried Ndidi, and Kalidou Koulibaly.
