Ashantigold defeated Inter Allies on Saturday at the Obuasi Len Clay stadium during Week 9 of the Ghana premier league to extend their lead at the summit of the league table.
The Miners have opened a three-point gap at the top but Karela United and Dreams FC both on 14 points – lying 2nd and 3rd respectively – can close the gap on Sunday with victories.
If C.K Akonnor and his team are going to win the title they know they must make their home ground a no-go zone and so far that mission is well course. They have won all four home games this season against Wa All Stars,Karela United, Asante Kotoko and recently Inter Allies. They have scored five goals conceding no goals thanks to a solid defence made up of Ibrahim Samed, Richard Osei Agyemang, Tijani Joshua. Rolan Amozou constituting the back four in front of the veteran 35-year old goalkeeper George Owu.
Ashgold also know that to win the league title this season they have a lot to do. Indeed in the home game against Asante Kotoko it was true that they faced a weak Kotoko attack but The Miners defended stoutly giving their visitors no chance at all. The rest of the teams have left Obuasi beaten and scoreless.
To keep 4 clean sheets in four home games is no big deal but it is when you have the veteran Owu commanding things in goal for his side. That makes it noteworthy for any team that comes to play soccer at the Len Clay.
It still remains to be seen whether this team can go even unbeaten at home after the first round and if they manage to do that the league trophy might be on it way to Obuasi for the 5th time in history.
