Atletico Madrid’s in-form midfielder Thomas Partey will be handed a huge pay boost to ward interest off interest from English champions Chelsea.

One of the few positives from Atletico Madrid’s season thus far has been the emergence of Thomas Partey as a genuine midfield option for Diego Simeone, and the Ghanaian’s performances are set to bag him a salary boost.

While he is not a guaranteed starter for Los Colchoneros, nobody expected him to be, however he is now the first option the Argentine coach turns to when rotation is on the agenda.

Goals from midfield are important and Thomas has provided those this term; he is the joint top scorer for the club alongside Angel Correa, although this is more of a sorry indictment of the poor form shown by Antoine Griezmann.

Having only signed a new deal in February, under normal circumstances it would be strange for the midfielder’s contract to be reviewed so soon, however the club feel he is deserving of a raise.

Partey’s current contract runs until June 2022 with the 24-year-old currently one of the lowest paid members of the senior team.

Los Rojiblancos are taking this move in order to bring a sense of parity in payment within the club’s midfielders, negotiations are on track and an announcement is expected sooner rather than later.

It is not anticipated that this will have any bearing on the length of the midfielder’s contract, though his buy-out clause will be increased.
