Ghanaian midfielder Thomas Partey has revealed that his departure from Atlético Madrid in 2020 wasn’t about money or ambition—but because of a disagreement over his agent’s commission.
In a recent interview, Partey explained that he had agreed to renew his contract with Atlético Madrid, which included better terms for himself. However, the agreement came with one condition: his agent would receive a 10% commission.
Everyone Agreed—Except the President
According to Partey, everyone at Atlético’s board level agreed to the deal, but they told him to speak directly with club president Enrique Cerezo for the final go-ahead. When Partey met Cerezo, he was shocked to hear that the president would only approve a 3% commission for his agent—far less than the agreed 10%.
To try and fix the situation, Partey even offered to pay the remaining 7% himself out of his own salary. Still, Cerezo refused, saying it was against the club’s “principles.”
Arsenal Enter the Picture
With the transfer deadline quickly approaching, Partey’s agent contacted Arsenal, who had thought he had already signed a new deal with Atlético. But when the agent explained the situation, Arsenal were happy to cover the 10% commission, which opened the door for a last-minute move.
The deal was completed on transfer deadline day, and Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million, activating his release clause.
What This Means
Partey’s story highlights how behind-the-scenes decisions—not just footballing matters—can determine a player’s future. Despite his commitment to Atlético Madrid, a refusal to meet simple agent terms ended a long and loyal spell at the club.
