Head coach Tom Cleverley has highlighted the qualities that he believes will make Brendan Wiredu such an important signing for Plymouth Argyle.
Cleverley believes the 25-year-old, who joined the Pilgrims last week in a reported £300,000 transfer from Fleetwood Town, adds a physical presence to the squad, as well as plenty of previous League One experience
Wiredu also has leadership attributes, as demonstrated by the fact he was captain of Fleetwood, and has a lot of ability as a player, who can operate in defence, at full-back or in midfield, so it should be money well spent by Argyle.
Cleverley said: “Brendan is one we have been really keen to do. He brings a physicality to the team we are maybe lacking a little bit.
“He has played a lot of games at this level. He has been captain of his club so brings a real leadership and on top of that you could see after one training session he has a lot of quality. So really pleased with doing that one.”
As it stands, Argyle have made eight summer signings. Joining Wiredu in making the move to Home Park have been Jamie Paterson, Caleb Watts, Jack MacKenzie, Bradley Ibrahim, Xavier Amaechi, Owen Oseni and Bim Pepple.
The first chance for Argyle’s Green Army of supporters to see the new recruits in action in this country will be against Truro City in Cornwall next Wednesday (April 16). Before then, the Pilgrims will play German 2. Bundesliga side Eintracht Braunschweig in Austria on Friday as part of their pre-season training camp.
