Seasoned Ghanaian trainer J.E Sarpong has called on Black Stars coach C.K Akonnor not to adopt the tactical philosophy that won the Africa Cup of Nations title for Ghana.
The former Asante Kotoko and Ebusua Dwarfs tactician, rather, wants the ex-Ghana captain to design his own philosophy that will fit his style of play.
Akonnor remarked some weeks ago that he will adopt and modify the tactical formation used by Ghana’s victorious 1978 Africa Cup of Nations team.
But responding to Akonnor’s statement, coach Sarpong said the former Wolfsburg skipper needs to make his mark with his own tactical approach rather than reproducing that of the 1978 team.
“It is good that he is being ambitious with winning the AFCON title. Times have changed and what happened in 1978 is different from what is happening now. Players who played in 1978 are different from those playing currently,” Sarpong told Happy FM.
“The type of players in the team will also influence your style of play so he should play to the ability and capabilities of the players.”
“CK Akonnor should tread cautiously. He is a very young coach and everything he says about winning the AFCON will be judged”, he added.
Akonnor was appointed as Ghana’s Black Stars head coach in January 2020 after the Ghana Football Association failed to renew his former boss Kwasi Appiah’s contract which expired on 31st December, 2020.
