John Antwi’s Pyramids suffered a 1-0 defeat against RS Berkane in the CAF Confederation Cup final on Sunday evening.

The Cairo-based side had a shaky start to the game and nearly allowed Berkane to score the opener after 11 minutes of play but the Moroccan outfit failed to capitalize on a defensive error.

Four minutes later, Pyramids conceded after failing to deal with a set piece as Issoufou Dayo tapped home for Berkane to take the early lead amid a defensive scramble.

Following the early goal, Pyramids had a few chances to respond but couldn’t create a real threat on goal in the first half.

Just three minutes after the break, Berkane had a glorious chance to double their lead when Bakr El Helali made his way into the box from the right-hand side and fed Mouhssine Iajour, who skied his shot off target.

Pyramids head coach Ante Cacic tried to bolster his attack by bringing on reinforcements in Ibrahim Hassan and John Antwi in place of defenders Ahmed Ayman Mansour and Ahmed Tawfik.

In the 64th minute, Pyramids nearly grabbed the equalizer as Abdallah El-Said’s set-piece effort was diverted by Mohamed Farouk but his shot was just a whisker wide.

Another defensive error by Pyramids in the 72nd minute almost gifted Berkane their second goal of the evening.

Miscommunication at the back between Omar Gaber and Abdullah Bakry presented the ball to Hamdi Laachir, who went one-on-one with El-Mahdy Soliman but his shot went high above the crossbar.

Pyramids’ disappointing defeat means that they have failed to qualify for the CAF Champions League next season, having already confirmed third place in the Egyptian Premier League table.
