The Black Satellites of Ghana came close to winning the gold medal at the 2024 WAFU Zone B U20 Championship but were edged out by Nigeria in a thrilling 2-1 final on Wednesday night at Stade de Kégué.
Despite their determined efforts, the Ghanaian team couldn’t overcome a solid Nigerian side. Star forward Jerry Afriyie scored Ghana’s only goal, bringing his tournament total to five. Though his impressive performance continued in the final, it wasn’t enough to secure the victory.
Afriyie’s standout performance throughout the tournament was instrumental in Ghana’s progress, and his goal-scoring tally cemented him as one of the competition’s top players. Even though Ghana missed the title, their campaign earned them a place in the 2025 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations, providing another opportunity to pursue a spot in the FIFA U20 World Cup.
Earlier in the day, Ivory Coast claimed the bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Niger in the third-place match.
Returning home with a well-deserved silver, the Black Satellites have laid a strong foundation for future competitions and demonstrated their potential on the continental stage.
