Mamelodi Sundowns star Keagan Dolly says his side deserve to be crowned African champions
Keagan Dolly says luck has nothing to do with it as Mamelodi Sundowns were crowned African Champions League winners on Sunday night.
The Brazilians lost 1-0 to Zamalek in Alexandria, but claimed the title 3-1 on aggregate to win a first star for their famous yellow jersey.
Having been knocked out of the competition by AS Vita Club, who were later disqualified, in the round before the group stages, some have said luck has played a major part for the Pretoria club.
But Dolly says it has rather been hard work and determination that has seen them lift the title.
“It was very difficult, Zamalek is a good team, we respect them,” Dolly told SuperSport TV. “They have good individuals. We knew we would have to work hard.
“With the hard work and the mentality we have had since the start of this campaign … people might say we were lucky to get into the pool phase, but now we have won it and I think we deserve it.
“Credit must go to our supporters who came and to the technical staff and my teammates.”
Khama Billiat has been stand-out player fir Sundowns in the campaign and he is now looking forward to playing in the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December.
“It has not always been a nice journey, it has had its ups and downs, but through the grace of God we are here,” he said.
“Now we are going to meet the best in the game. It will be a pleasure, we always want to play with the best and it is an opportunity for us to go and enjoy football among them.”
