2022 World Cup: Why Bernard Tekpetey deserves a place in the Black Stars

On Monday night, Bernard Tekpetey produced a masterclass.

The Ludogorets forward scored twice and assisted one more as his side clinched a huge 4-0 victory in the Bulgarian top-flight.

Fans were impressed by his showing and some even dared Otto Addo to call him for the Black Stars.

Sportsworldghana.com explains why he should be in the final squad as much as anyone.

GOALS GALORE

Bernard Tekpetey has netted eight goals for Ludogorets this season. Looking at the entire forward line of the team, no player has scored more.

In fact, he has more goals than Jordan Ayew, Felix Afena-Gyan, Iñaki Williams and Benjamin Tetteh combined.

That in itself is a crazy feat. Only Mohammed Kudus has scored more goals than the former Schalke 04 man.

The Black Stars have struggled to score on a consistent basis. Tekpetey will likely help the team curb this deficiency.

CONSISTENCY

In the last set of callups, Otto Addo added Felix Afena-Gyan to the team.

Many were surprised as he was not a regular with US Cremonese, something that remains to this day.

In the last few years, many have called for consistent players who are doing the job in their respective leagues.

Tekpetey easily fits the bill. Although the Bulgarian league isn’t a big one, he performs at a high level and also plays in the UEFA Europa League with his team.

He has played about 20 games already, impressive numbers from the 24-year-old.

A SAFEGUARD FOR OTTO ADDO

Otto Addo’s contract runs until the 2022 World Cup ends.

When that is all said and done, his performances, selections and overall competence will be graded.

He needs to set the right tone to give himself a chance of keeping the job in the future. And a way to start is picking players playing consistently.

Tekpetey is one of them and has caught the attention  of Ghanaians in that regard.

If his name is missing from the team, many will think Addo is being influenced or isn’t capable of getting the job done.

Hence, he may need to seriously consider involving Tekpetey.
