In an electrifying AFCON knockout clash, Angola triumphed over Namibia with a resounding 3-0 victory, securing their first-ever win in this stage of the competition.
Despite an early setback that saw Angola’s goalkeeper Neblu receive a red card for handling the ball outside the box, they displayed remarkable resilience. The turning point arrived when Gelson Dala showcased his prowess, scoring twice in quick succession, leaving Namibia in a precarious position.
The match took an unexpected twist as Namibia also saw a player, Lubeni Haukongo, sent off before halftime due to a second yellow card. Angola capitalized on the numerical advantage, orchestrating a beautiful combination between Fredy and Gilberto that set the stage for Dala’s clinical finish, providing Angola with a crucial lead.
Namibia’s fortunes further plummeted during a calamitous four-minute stretch. Haukongo’s ill-timed challenge on Mabululu earned him a second booking, reducing Namibia to ten men.
From the ensuing free-kick, Dala elevated his goal tally, heading the ball into the net. The result effectively sealed Angola’s historic AFCON win, as Mabululu’s second-half contribution added to their lead.
Despite early adversity, Angola showcased composure and skill, securing their spot in the quarter-finals.
The anticipation now builds as they await the challenge from either Nigeria or Cameroon in the next stage of the tournament.
This victory not only marked a significant milestone for Angola in AFCON knockout matches but also showcased their ability to overcome setbacks and dominate on the continental stage.
