Former Germany midfielder Toni Kroos has launched a stinging critique of the national team following their performance against Ghana’s Black Stars, claiming the team fell below its traditional standards in midfield and overall control.
A late Deniz Undav strike saw the four time world champions edge the West Africans 2-1 to make it back-to-back wins in March’s international break.
Kroos expressed disappointment with Germany’s display, insisting the four-time world champions were fortunate to secure a result and failed to dominate the game in their usual style.
“Germany used to be known for its midfield. It’s a disgrace to see Ghana outplay us there. We looked average today—it was just a lucky win. You can’t win the World Cup playing like this,” he said.
He also questioned tactical decisions, suggesting that Joshua Kimmich should be deployed in midfield to restore balance and control.
“You can’t win the World Cup playing like this. Joshua Kimmich should be playing in midfield. We also wasted too many chances. I expected more from the team,” Kroos added.
Germany have been drawn in Group E of the World Cup alongside Ghana’s neighbours Ivory Coast, debutants Curacao and South Americans, Ecuador.
