Ghana’s goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, is rallying his teammates to regroup with full focus and concentration after a disappointing loss to Cape Verde in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Black Stars encountered an early setback in the AFCON tournament, succumbing to a 2-1 defeat against Cape Verde. Goals from Jamiro Monteiro and Garry Rodrigues sealed the fate for the West African powerhouse.
Monteiro struck first for Cape Verde after 17 minutes, capitalizing on a rebound from a long shot that Richard Ofori initially parried. Fenerbahçe defender Alexander Djiku leveled the playing field for the Black Stars, only for comical defending to allow Cape Verde a late winner courtesy of Rodrigues.
Looking ahead to the upcoming clash against Egypt on Thursday, Ghana’s deputy captain emphasizes the need for focus and concentration from his teammates. Ofori, reflecting on the match, explained, “The ball was bouncing in front of me and also far away from me, so I needed to punch it wide, and unfortunately, my players were not there to block.”
Despite the setback, Ofori maintains optimism about Ghana’s prospects in the tournament, noting, “It happens in a game, and we need to focus and concentrate on the second game. That’s the most important thing.”
Following the defeat, the Black Stars find themselves in a challenging position in Group B, currently occupying the bottom spot without a point. The upcoming showdown against Egypt on Thursday becomes crucial for their tournament aspirations as they strive to rebound from the initial setback.
