The Confederation of African Football, CAF, has appointed Peter Waweru Kamaru from Kenya as centre referee when Ghana host Central African Republic in the final Group E match of the Africa Cup of Nations Cote D’Ivoire 2023 qualifier in September.

The 39-year old, has a Doctorate degree in Pure Mathematics and works as University lecturer in Nairobi, Kenya.

Waweru started to officiate football matches in the lower leagues of Kenya in 2011 before joining the Kenyan Premier League before being listed as a FIFA referee in 2017.

He has officiated in various international tournaments such as AFCON U-20 in 2019, AFCON 2019 in Egypt, 2019 U-17 World Cup in Brazil, and 2021 CHAN where he officiated the final.

Waweru has also enjoyed the privilege of handling several CAF Champions League games, Confederation Cup matches and FIFA World Cup qualifying matches.

Currently, he is the Director of Sports at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Techniology in Nairabi, Kenya.

He will be assisted by compatriots Gilbert Kipkoech Cheruiyot (Assistant I), Stephen Eleazar Onyango Yiembe (Assistant II) while Omar Abdulkadir Artan from Somalia works as Fourth Official.

Sanusi Mohammed from Nigeria has also been appointed as the Match Commissioner with Fatou Gaye from Senegal as Referee Assessor. Ghana’s Dr. Christiana Baah and Frederick Acheampong will work as Medical Officer and Pre-match Ceremony Coordinator respectively.

The match is scheduled for the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at 16H00. Ghana need a win to qualify for yet another Africa Cup of Nations in Cote D’Ivoire.

The Black Stars sit on top of the Group E with 9 points – 1 point ahead of second placed Angola and two points richer than Central African Republic who occupy the third spot in the table.
