Ghana coach Otto Addo has confirmed that Mohammed Kudus will captain the Black Stars in their crucial AFCON 2025 qualifier against Sudan on Thursday.
In a press conference held on Wednesday, Addo explained that the West Ham midfielder was chosen to lead the team in the absence of regular captain Andre Ayew and deputy Thomas Partey.
Andre Ayew was left out of the squad at the coach’s discretion, while Arsenal star Thomas Partey withdrew due to illness.
Richard Ofori, the second deputy captain, has also been sidelined and has not featured for the national team since AFCON 2023.
Although Jordan Ayew, the most experienced player in the current squad, was anticipated to take up the captain’s armband, the honor was given to Kudus, who has been a key figure for the Black Stars since his debut in 2019.
Kudus, who has scored 11 goals in 36 appearances for Ghana, will captain the national team for the first time in the must-win encounter. Expectations are high for the young midfielder as Ghana seeks to secure vital points in their AFCON qualification campaign.
The Black Stars will face Sudan again on Monday in Libya, with the decision to have Mohammed Kudus as captain possibly indicating a shift in leadership, though it is unclear if this change will be permanent.
