Sudan captain Mohamed Abdelrahman has acknowledged the scale of the challenge facing his side as they prepare to take on Senegal in the round of 16, describing the reigning African giants as a strong, experienced team with a rich pedigree.

Sudan, African champions in 1970, secured a place in the knockout stage after finishing among the best third-placed teams in the group phase. Their progression has sparked rare joy among supporters back home, offering a moment of pride and togetherness amid a period of hardship and uncertainty.

For Abdelrahman, the achievement carries deep significance, marking Sudan’s first appearance in the knockout rounds since 2012. He believes the milestone reflects the resilience of the squad and the spirit they are determined to showcase on the continental stage, regardless of the magnitude of the task ahead.

Speaking to CAFonline.com, the Sudan skipper stressed the importance of mental strength and unity against a formidable opponent.

“It will be a very difficult match by all standards. We know our opponent well,” Abdelrahman said. “Senegal are a strong and experienced team with a rich history in the competition. The key to victory is our determination, perseverance, belief in ourselves and our desire to go far in this tournament.”

Sudan will now aim to channel that resolve and collective belief as they seek to defy the odds against one of Africa’s most decorated sides.
