The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Accra Sports Stadium to host Ghana’s upcoming match against Sudan later this month. This decision comes after the Baba Yara Stadium was banned due to concerns over its poor playing surface.

CAF officials inspected both the Accra and Cape Coast stadiums last weekend as potential venues for the match. Following this assessment, the Accra Sports Stadium received conditional approval for the game.

In a statement addressed to Prosper Harrison Addo, the General Secretary of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), CAF noted, “Following a comprehensive review of the reports of the CAF independent inspection regarding the Cape Coast and Accra Sports Stadia, we are pleased to inform you that the Accra Sports Stadium has been approved to host the AFCON Qualifiers for Morocco 2025. Specifically, it will host the Group F – Matchday 3 encounter between Ghana and Sudan, which is scheduled for October 11, 2024.”

The statement further emphasized, “In light of this approval, we kindly request that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the stadium management team prioritise the necessary enhancements to the pitch and other critical areas of the stadium leading up to the match day to ensure an optimal experience for both teams and the attending fans.”

CAF also mentioned that they would continue to monitor the stadium’s readiness for this match and future CAF-sanctioned events.

This match marks the first competitive game for the Black Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium in three years, with the previous match held against São Tomé and Príncipe. Since then, most major fixtures have taken place in Cape Coast and Kumasi.

Ghana will face Sudan at home on Friday, October 11, for Matchday 3 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers before traveling to Libya for the return leg at the Martyrs of February Stadium on Monday, October 14, for the Matchday 4 games.

The Black Stars began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 loss to Angola at Baba Yara Stadium, followed by a 1-1 draw with Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Berkane, leaving them in third place with only one point.

Head coach Otto Addo and his team are looking to secure six points against Sudan to boost their chances of qualifying for the tournament in Morocco.

In the meantime, Otto Addo will announce his squad for the doubleheader against Sudan later this week.
