Ivory Coast secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Gambia in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier at the Felix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium on Monday evening, holding onto an early goal to claim all three points.
The result propelled the Elephants to the top of Group F, strengthening their chances of securing automatic qualification for the tournament, which will be hosted in North America next year.
Early Haller Goal Sets the Tone
The hosts started brightly, asserting dominance from the opening whistle. Their attacking intent paid off in the 15th minute when Simon Adingra delivered a pinpoint cross into the box, allowing Sébastien Haller to rise highest and head home confidently, giving Ivory Coast an early advantage.
The Elephants maintained control for most of the first half, dictating possession and limiting Gambia’s attacking opportunities. Nicolas Pépé came close to doubling the lead just before the break with a well-struck free-kick, but the Gambian defense held firm to keep the deficit at one goal.
Gambia Fight Back, but Ivory Coast Hold Firm
The Scorpions showed more urgency in the second half, seeing more of the ball and pushing forward in search of an equalizer.
Ivory Coast nearly extended their lead in the 70th minute when Jean-Philippe Krasso set up Haller with a well-weighted through ball, but the Borussia Dortmund striker failed to keep his shot on target, firing over the crossbar.
Gambia’s best chance came moments later when Yankuba Minteh capitalized on a midfield turnover, driving towards goal. However, his low shot was comfortably gathered by goalkeeper Yahia Fofana, denying the visitors a way back into the game.
Both teams made tactical substitutions in the final half-hour, but none had a significant impact on the outcome. The Elephants remained resolute in defense, seeing out the game to secure a crucial victory in Abidjan.
Ivory Coast will now shift their focus to their upcoming World Cup qualifiers in September, aiming to maintain their grip on Group F.
