Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has urged his players to remain focused despite Ghana strengthening their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification hopes with a commanding 3-0 victory over Madagascar on Monday night.
A brace from Thomas Partey and a close-range finish from Mohammed Kudus sealed the win in Morocco, extending Ghana’s lead at the top of Group I to five points. The result puts the Black Stars in a strong position ahead of the final phase of qualifiers, with 15 points accumulated so far.
However, Addo, who guided Ghana to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, has warned that the team must not become complacent, emphasizing that the qualification race is far from over.
“We are in a good position, but this is also a danger, and I’m already thinking about keeping our heads focused. The job is really not done,” Addo told 3Sports after the game.
He highlighted the unpredictability of the qualifiers and the need for continuous effort, pointing out that the competition remains tight despite Ghana’s lead.
“Maybe if Comoros win, we will just be three points ahead of them, and it is still a long way to go. We have to focus. If anyone thinks we are through, then he is making a big mistake. I have seen a lot of football, a lot of things happening, and we have to stay focused. I’m happy for today, but the job is really not done.”
The Black Stars, who have participated in four previous World Cups (2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022), are pushing for a fifth appearance on the global stage. With crucial fixtures still ahead, Addo and his squad remain determined to secure Ghana’s spot at the 2026 tournament.
