2026 World Cup: ‘Anything can happen’ – Asamoah Gyan tips Ghana to trouble England

Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan believes the Black Stars have a genuine chance of causing an upset when they face England in a decisive Group L encounter at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Boston on Tuesday.

England go into the fixture as favourites following their impressive 4-2 victory over Croatia in their opening match, while Ghana also arrive in confident mood after a dramatic 1-0 win over Panama, sealed by a stoppage-time strike from Caleb Yirenkyi.

Despite England’s strong start and squad depth, Gyan insists World Cup football often defies expectations and believes Ghana must not be underestimated.

“On paper, England are ahead of Ghana, but in a tournament, anything can happen,” Gyan said.

“It all depends on how each team approaches the game.”

The former Black Stars captain, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer and the nation’s highest scorer in World Cup history, stressed that Ghana often thrive when they are not burdened by pressure and external expectations.

“We know our national team, and that’s why we love them. The people back home are passionate,” he added.

Both sides head into the clash level on three points after winning their opening Group L fixtures, with top spot in the group up for grabs.

A win for Carlos Queiroz’s side would move Ghana a step closer to securing qualification for the Round of 32, ahead of their final group-stage meeting with Croatia.

England, meanwhile, will be aiming to build on their strong start and potentially secure early passage into the knockout phase with another victory.

Having featured for Ghana at three FIFA World Cups, Gyan remains confident that his former side can rise to the occasion if they deliver a disciplined and inspired performance against one of the tournament favourites.
