2026 World Cup: GFA urged to add Kwasi Appiah to Black Stars technical team

Veteran sports journalist Osei Owusu Bempah has advised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to consider bringing former Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah into the national team’s technical setup ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to Bempah, Appiah’s experience and strong understanding of the game make him a valuable addition to the Black Stars. His comments come after Appiah’s impressive performance as head coach of Sudan at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where he guided the team to a historic win over Equatorial Guinea.

Speaking on Asempa FM, Bempah said Appiah has both the technical knowledge and leadership qualities needed to support the current Black Stars setup.

“I believe Kwesi Appiah should be part of the Black Stars technical team for the 2026 World Cup. He understands football very well and has the personality to help the team. I see nothing wrong with him being included to support the technical team,” he said.

Ghana has been placed in Group L for the 2026 World Cup, alongside Panama, England, and Croatia. The Black Stars will begin their group campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, face England on June 23 in Boston, and play Croatia on June 27 in Philadelphia.

After disappointing early exits at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and the 2022 tournament in Qatar, Ghana will be hoping for a better performance at the expanded 2026 finals.

Meanwhile, Kwesi Appiah will be aiming to lead Sudan into the Round of 16 at the AFCON when they take on Burkina Faso on New Year’s Eve.

Appiah, who is also a member of the GFA Executive Council, is remembered for becoming the first Ghanaian coach to qualify the Black Stars for the World Cup in 2014. However, he was relieved of his duties after Ghana’s exit at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.
