Former GHALCA Chairman Cudjoe Fianoo has raised concerns about what he believes is a worrying pattern in Ghana football—one that links influence within the system to the success or survival of clubs.
According to him, a statement once made by Alhaji Grusah continues to ring true. Grusah reportedly said that many officials who work within the Ghana Football Association (GFA) often see their clubs suffer relegation soon after they leave office. Fianoo believes this is not just a coincidence, but something that points to deeper issues within the football structure.
In simple terms, Fianoo suggests that while these individuals are part of the system, they may have some level of influence that helps protect or support their clubs. However, once they are no longer in those positions, that influence disappears—and their clubs struggle as a result.
He backed his claim with several examples. He mentioned that under the leadership of Alhaji MND Jawula, Real Tamale United (RTU) faced difficulties after his time in office. The same situation, he noted, happened to Kwaebibrem Stars when Oheneba Charles was no longer in a powerful role.
Fianoo also pointed to Okwawu United during the time of Abra-Appiah, as well as Real Sportive after Y. A. Ibrahim’s involvement. In addition, Accra Great Olympics, linked to Ade Coker, has also faced similar challenges over the years.
For Fianoo, these cases highlight a system that may not be entirely fair or balanced. He believes Ghana football must move away from a structure where influence plays such a strong role in determining the fate of clubs.
He stressed the need for transparency, fairness, and equal treatment for all teams, regardless of who is in charge or connected to the system. According to him, until these issues are addressed, some clubs will continue to struggle—not because of performance alone, but because of what happens behind the scenes.
Fianoo’s comments add to ongoing discussions about fairness and governance in Ghana football, as many continue to call for reforms that will make the game more competitive and just for all.
