Mozambique started their 2026 World Cup Qualification campaign impressively with a 3-2 away victory over Group G rivals Botswana at the Obed Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown on Thursday afternoon.

Despite an early injury forcing Faisal Bangal to be replaced by Stanley Ratifo just seven minutes into the game, the Mambas took the lead in the 14th minute. Clesio Bauque capitalized on Gildo Vilanculos’s assist, beating Botswana goalkeeper Kabelo Dambe for a 1-0 lead.

Botswana, featuring attackers like Segolame Boy and Tumisang Orebonye, had their moments, but Mozambique’s goalkeeper Ernan Siluane denied them, giving the visitors an advantage at halftime.

The Zebras made changes in the second half, introducing Molaodi Tlhalefang and Mogakolodi Ngele to boost their attack. Mozambique responded by bringing on veteran defender Mexer to strengthen their defense.

Mozambique extended their lead seven minutes into the second half, as Elias Pelembe set up Ratifo for the second goal. Despite Botswana’s effort to mount a comeback, the Mambas secured a two-goal lead in the 76th minute with Jonathan Muiomo converting Ratifo’s assist for a 3-1 lead.

Botswana managed to pull another goal back in the 85th minute, with Kabelo Seakanyeng scoring after Ngele’s missed penalty. However, Mozambique held on for an away triumph.

Mozambique will face Algeria in Maputo on Sunday, 19 November, in their next Group G match, while Botswana welcomes Guinea to Francistown on Tuesday, 21 November.
